Valerie Barton-Richardson is CAMBA’s Chief Administrative Officer for Economic Development, Education and Youth Development, Family and Homeless Services. As part of her role at CAMBA, Valerie is responsible for over $98 million in City, State and Federal contracts and private grants that impact over 45,000 low-income adults and children, including immigrants and those who are homeless.
Valerie oversees all the program planning, resource development, operation, and budget administration for over 100 contracts, and provides overall supervision to more than half of CAMBA’s employees. Valerie is also responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of CAMBA’s services across the diverse and interconnected areas of adult literacy, workforce development, business, and entrepreneurial assistance, out of school time and college readiness for youth, homelessness prevention and shelter, and family services.
In her time at CAMBA, Valerie has also helped guide CAMBA’s expansion of youth development programs in schools and NYCHA centers from $1.4 million to $10.9 million. Valerie also oversaw the successful implementation of CAMBA’s Mobilize Your Business (MYB) program to help immigrant, low-income, and disadvantaged entrepreneurs and worker owner cooperatives improve their businesses using mobile technology.
Valerie was instrumental in the restoration of lending capacity at CAMBA Economic Development Corporation as well as the expansion of emergency transitional shelter programs from $1.8 million to $50 million, including 603 family shelter units across six sites and 762 single adult shelter beds across five sites. Valerie also led the creation of Brownsville In Violence Out (BIVO), CAMBA’s evidence-based gun-violence prevention initiative.
Valerie joined CAMBA in 1993. Before joining CAMBA, Valerie worked in the New York City Public School System right in Brooklyn. Valerie holds an MPA from Columbia University and an MA and BA from Harvard Radcliffe College.
